The Language of Blackjack

Groups of people start creating their own language after a time. Genders do it, groups of people do it, even people in the same kind of games do it - people who like blackjack in particular. It was only to be expected after all as blackjack is a game with specific terms and unique uses for words that can only be applied while you're playing blackjack. If you weren't playing blackjack, these terms would probably mean something different entirely. Making sure that you know these terms by heart is the first step in learning how to play true blackjack.

The term "hole card" may have been first introduced to a novice gambler by way of the famous poker variant, Texas Hold'em. Of course, Texas Hold'em is by far not the first game to use that term. In the case of blackjack, the term hole card refers to any face down card currently in play on the table.

Surrendering isn't just a military or generic term, it is one that has a specific if familiar use to even the most novice players. As with any military movement, blackjack involves a measure of luck. For victory to occur, some things need to happen and sometimes in a specific order. Many blackjack strategies revolve around making sure that the series of events that you need occurs. Without chance affecting the table in general, blackjack would be just a little boring. In response to the effect of luck, players can opt to surrender, receiving half their bet back - this is essentially to make sure that you lose the minimum amount.

Blackjack hands can come in two versions - hard and soft. Hard hands are cards that force the player to use the ace as a one, as otherwise, they would bust. Soft hands are free to use the eleven aspect of the ace. Hard hands and soft hands have strategies only applicable to each of them. Even card counting has its own set of terms, like the running count. The running count is the current measure and approximation of the status of the game.

Blackjack terms are all over and like any language, continues to grow as the community and the game grows. As you play at the tables, you may find yourself exposed to many other terms that will enrich and ease your poker experience. Before all else of course, remember the true purpose of anything that can be called a game - have fun and enjoy yourself.
